Challenge

SLR Consulting was commissioned by Orchard Property Group to provide landscape design input on the Pebble Creek development, a 646 lot residential subdivision within the Flagstone PDA (State Priority Development Area).

Surrounded by parkland, and bordered to the north by Flagstone Creek, this master planned community is intricately designed to celebrate the natural environment and create a connected community.

Solution

Pebble Creek focuses on the integration of the built environment with the natural environment. Celebrating the developments location along Flagstone Creek, Pebble Creek focuses connecting the community to nature through the implementation of green pedestrian links and vegetated streetscapes.

Incorporating the requirements of both Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) and Logan City Council within the design vision for this unique location presented a series of site-based design challenges. By using consistent theming, materiality and the underlying design theory focused on the “meandering” Flagstone Creek, SLR designed a series of connected and legible spaces that adapts to the changing needs of a community and the surrounding environment.

At the heart of the community sits Pebble Creek Parklands a multimillion dollar district level park, featuring kickabout spaces, playgrounds, a multi-use court, learn to ride precincts, picnic areas, pump tracks, fitness equipment and dog off-leash areas.

The parkland creates interest and variety with the combination of grand unveilings, intermediate spaces, level change, meandering pathways, and informal tracks. The carefully composed and arranged landscape, blends organic materials, tactile experiences, soft colours, and natural curated landscape components into a space of diverse recreational uses and enhanced environmental outcomes. Creating a wholistic livable community that supports the mental and physically well being of its residents.

Impact

The project was awarded ‘Landscape Architecture & Urban Infrastructure Winner’ at the 2023 Logan Urban Design.

The Judges’ cited “The Pebble Creek Parklands exemplify a restrained approach to parkland design wherein the thoughtful preservation and featuring of the existing forest landscape has been complimented with a series of refined landscape places that are sensitive and seamless in general arrangement and finer grain robust detailing.

Key to the designers’ approach has been not overplaying their hand, and expertly avoiding looking at the individual landscape statement pieces in favour of a carefully composed, beautifully arranged landscape composition that blends organic materials, soft colours, and natural and curated landscape components in a joyful and calming landscape that will mature gracefully as it evolves through time and community use”.
