Biography

Dan is based in our Nelson office and has 21 years of experience in environmental consulting that spans both New Zealand and Australia. This experience has involved the preparation of environmental impact assessments, environment plans, marine consents, marine discharge consents, resource consents, risk assessments, stakeholder and iwi engagement programmes, environmental monitoring programmes and conducting marine ecological surveys.

Dan has specialised in the offshore marine environment, specifically in regard to working with the legislative requirements of the EEZ Act, Maritime Transport Act, EPBC Act, OPGGS Act, Environment Regulations, Marine Protection Rules and the Resource Management Act. In addition to numerous marine consent and marine discharge consent applications, Dan has also prepared many Marine Mammal Impact Assessments (MMIA) and oil spill contingency plans.

A lot of the work Dan has undertaken over his career has been involved with the offshore oil and gas sector. However, this industry and experience is directly applicable to offshore wind developments in terms of regulatory requirements, similar impacts on the environment during construction, occupation of space and the implementation of exclusion zones around infrastructure. Dan’s offshore experience, both regulatory and environmental monitoring, combined with his extensive stakeholder engagement experience will be beneficial to the inclusion of any offshore application regarding wind farms.

Presentations and stakeholder engagement have played a key role during engagement with regulators, stakeholders and iwi and Dan brings a great background of knowledge and experience he can draw on during these engagements. Dan has engaged with iwi, hapū and rūnanga around most of NZ coastline so has a detailed understanding of the cultural dynamics throughout New Zealand. As a result, Dan has developed a network of contacts around the country in many different sectors, government, iwi and hapū groups. In addition, Dan has completed stakeholder engagement in the states of Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia regarding offshore applications, and developed relationships with the fishing industry.
