Join us at ISWA

SLR looks forward to attending and presenting at the ISWA World Congress 2026 in London this November. Bringing together waste and resource management professionals, policymakers, researchers and industry leaders from around the world, the conference provides a unique platform to share knowledge, showcase innovation and discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the transition to a more circular economy.

Key technical sessions with SLR

During the conference, SLR experts will share practical insights on topics including sustainable pharmaceutical packaging, artificial grass pitch sustainability, residual waste decarbonisation, Black Soldier Fly technology and soil resource management. Through presentations, discussions and a virtual poster, the team will showcase innovative solutions that advance waste prevention, resource efficiency and circular economy goals. Further details on each session are provided below.

When carbon accounting breaks the circular economy – decarbonising residual waste incineration between incentives, credibility and reality

Monday 9th November 14:30 – 14:45

Speakers: SLR’s Technical Director, Paul James with Coeeinne Goenee (Indaver)

This technical session will explore the challenges of decarbonising residual waste incineration in an increasingly complex policy and regulatory landscape. Using an operator-led case study from Indaver and SLR, the session examines how carbon accounting rules influence investment decisions, the opportunities and uncertainties surrounding carbon capture and storage (CCUS), and how organisations can develop credible, practical decarbonisation roadmaps while balancing affordability, regulatory requirements and circular economy objectives.

Transforming pharmaceutical packaging: Collaboration as a success accelerator

Tuesday 10th November 14:30 – 14:45 | Waste Planning & Service Delivery (Room 3)

Speakers: SLR’s Associate Director Marion Briggs and Nadine Lampka (Schreiner Group).

This technical session will examine how the healthcare sector can reduce waste and emissions through smarter packaging design. Using the Alliance to Zero’s Secure Blister-Free Syringe as a case study, the session will showcase how innovative, blister-free packaging can cut plastic use by up to 80%, improve supply chain efficiency, and lower carbon impacts while maintaining patient safety and regulatory compliance. It will also highlight the critical role of cross-industry collaboration in delivering scalable circular economy solutions in highly regulated environments.

From community asset to waste challenge – tackling the environmental impacts of artificial grass pitches

Tuesday 10th November 15:15 – 16:00 | Waste Planning & Service Delivery (Room 3)

Speakers: SLR’s Principal Sustainability Consultant, Chris Porter

This technical session will explore how the sports sector is balancing the social and community benefits of artificial grass pitches with growing environmental and circular economy challenges. Featuring perspectives from Sport England, SAPCA, the Football Foundation and the European Synthetic Turf Council, the session will examine key issues including microplastic loss, biodiversity, end-of-life management and recycling infrastructure, while highlighting policy developments, industry initiatives and innovative solutions that support more sustainable and resource-efficient artificial sports surfaces.

Are not waste: Closing the gap between policy intent and practice

Wednesday 11th November 12:15 – 12:30 | Waste Planning & Service Delivery (Room 2)

Speakers: SLR’s Technical Director, Chris Berryman

This technical session explores the disconnect between waste policy and the management of soils and stones in construction and development projects. Drawing on the Society for the Environment’s work, the session will examine how current regulations can hinder the reuse of valuable soil resources, leading to unnecessary waste and landfill disposal. It will highlight the environmental importance of healthy soils and discuss the need for a more coordinated UK-wide approach to support soil reuse, waste prevention and better environmental outcomes.

Black Soldier Fly: The small insect with the potential to make a big difference

Created by SLR’s Senior Consultant, Leah Bennett

Leah’s virtual poster will be available to view throughout the three-day event. It explores how Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology can transform food waste into valuable resources, supporting a more circular and sustainable food system. Through engaging visuals and real-world examples, the poster highlights how BSF larvae convert food waste into protein-rich animal feed and other beneficial by-products, while showcasing the opportunities, challenges and global potential of this innovative approach to food waste management and resource recovery.

Let's connect

If you’re heading to ISWA this year, we’d love to connect. Our team will be in London throughout the event, and we’d be interested in discussing upcoming projects, collaboration opportunities, and how we can support your sustainability ambitions.
