ACWA Power Grootvlei Gas to Power (G2P) Project near Secunda, Mpumalanga Province

07 July 2026 | Client: ACWA Power

ACWA Power is looking to develop a Gas to Power (G2P) Project in South Africa linked to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (GASIPPPP).

The proposed development (Grootvlei G2P) Facility) is east of Secunda Town, within the Goven Mbeki Local Municipality, Gert Sibande District Municipality, Mpumalanga province.

The proposed development will entail the establishment of:

  • A 1350 MW G2P facility, including the establishment of an on-site substation and switching station;
  • Associated infrastructure including internal access roads and construction laydown areas;
  • Overhead transmission lines (OTL) to two alternative substations; and
  • Connection to the nearest natural gas pipeline (the ROMPCO Pipeline).

The current process is an Environmental Impact Assessment for the G2P facility, the connection to the ROMPCO pipeline, and associated infrastructure such as the access road and construction laydown area.

SLR Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SLR), an independent firm of Environmental Assessment Practitioners, has been appointed by ACWA Power to manage the integrated environmental authorisation processes.
