The Shawfair Masterplan proposals present one of the largest masterplaning projects in Scotland today. As it develops, Shawfair will be an entirely new self-sufficient community of around 4,000 homes located in Midlothian to the south east of Edinburgh. The masterplan will see the delivery of a new town centre, three new schools and large areas of public open space. The development also benefits from the Borders Railway rail halt located in the centre of Shawfair connecting residents to Edinburgh city centre in minutes.

OPEN - now part of SLR - has been involved as part of a multi-disciplinary design team helping deliver the Shawfair proposals on behalf of Shawfair LLP working in conjunction with Midlothian Council. OPEN / SLR’s current role is in helping deliver the Masterplan proposals, providing specific masterplanning advice, helping implement landscape proposals and advising on future planning applications and Landscape and Visual matters.

OPEN / SLR has most recently been instrumental in progressing the Town Centre vision, testing the potential for a rich mix of uses and preparing illustrative material which conveys the potential and aspiration for the new centre. This vision has been shared with key council officers and councillors in order to establish a common aspiration for the new place.
