Challenge

The proposed highway scheme involved the widening and improvement of the existing road and construction of a new length of road to link the A382 at Forches Cross with the A383.

SLR was commissioned to undertake a range of heritage services required in support of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed development and have provided ongoing project management.

Solution

No designated heritage assets were located within the boundary of the site; however, the Grade II registered Stover Park borders it along the section of the A382. A number of non-designated heritage assets were also located within the site.

Impact

SLR’s role on the project included heritage programme project management, expert advice and input to the design process to ensure potential impacts on heritage assets were minimised, and the preparation of an Environmental Statement (ES) chapter for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) including a setting assessment.

The site was located within a rich historic landscape and the extent of artefacts and sites of both prehistoric and historic date demonstrates the potential for further, unknown archaeological remains to exist within the bounds of the site.
