Jon Smieja

Biography

Jon Smieja offers more than 13 years of experience developing and implementing sustainability, circular economy, and extended producer responsibility (EPR) strategies for companies across a range of industries. His expertise includes corporate sustainability strategy, circularity programs, product sustainability, materials health, life cycle assessment, sustainability reporting, waste reduction, and regulatory compliance. Jon has led enterprise-wide sustainability initiatives, developed product sustainability frameworks, established lifecycle assessment and materials transparency programs, and directed the preparation of corporate social responsibility reporting.

His experience spans leadership roles with WAP Sustainability, GreenBiz Group, Andersen Corporation, and Steelcase, where he provided strategic guidance on sustainable design, product chemistry, circular business models, and environmental performance improvement. Jon is also a recognized thought leader in circular economy practices, having led content strategy and programming for major industry conferences, built partnerships with leading sustainability organizations, and developed peer networks focused on advancing circularity across sectors.

He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego, where his research focused on carbon dioxide reduction technologies and climate-related solutions.

In his free time, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, camping and hiking, running, golfing, and attending as many concerts as is humanly possible. He's also the reluctant caretaker of a very geriatric dog named Lincoln.
