Diving Into Underwater Noise
Justin Eickmeier & Jason Scheer (Prince of Port Rupert Authority) | Friday, June 7 at 1:30 PM (ADT)
In the maritime and environmental impact assessment sectors, there is a deficiency in guidance and supervised training in the principles of underwater noise and the impacts of commercial shipping. SLR Consulting, a partner of Green Marine, has developed a series of modular two-day training courses supported by Transport Canada’s Quiet Vessel Initiative. Module one introduces the concept of underwater noise, scales of measurement, impacts on marine mammals, and strategies for mitigation. Module two focuses on the history of commercial vessel types, source-level measurements, quiet ship classification, and energy savings devices.
As a case study in the effectiveness of the workshop, the Prince Rupert Port Authority, a participant of Green Marine, hosted a two-day in-person and virtual workshop In November 2023. A total of 62 participants were introduced to the fundamental principles and metrics used in underwater and how multiple hearing groups of marine mammals perceive it. In-person practical training demonstrated the deployment and operation of a smart hydrophone in a hands-on training session. In total, 23 groups were represented, including several First Nations, stakeholders, government representatives, regulatory authorities, environmental consultants, shipowners, pilots, and non-profit organizations.
This presentation summarizes key components of the training course as well as findings from the case study technical session of the workshop and hands-on training. It will also demonstrate how a proactive port program with a broad group of partners can use the workshop to collaborate in the sharing of knowledge to better control and manage the issue of underwater noise in a port context.
