Over the past ten years perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and related per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have received significant attention due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential adverse health effects. With the regulatory landscape changing globally and rapidly evolving methodology, determining the appropriate analytical approach can be a challenge.
From an analytical standpoint, liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) has been the primary technique for PFAS analysis. This “targeted” analytical technique reports a fixed list of parameters and is utilized in various EPA methods including 537.1, 533 and Draft Method 1633. Alternative methods such as Total Oxidizable Precursors (TOPs) assay and Total Organic Fluorine (TOF) analysis have also been developed in an effort to identify non-target PFAS present in a contaminated sample.
With a suite of analytical testing options, how do environmental practitioners select which method to use? It is important to evaluate the advantages and limitations of each analytical approach based on the specific project objectives, sample matrices, target compounds, laboratory capabilities, and regulatory requirements at both the federal and provincial level.
In this session, Kate will share some of SLR's recent work on PFAS in Manitoba. She will share a case study site including a brief site history and summary of previous assessments along with lessons learned.
