Biography
Marcelo is a metals and mining professional with experience in different base and precious metals. His career journey has honed his proficiency in project evaluation, mineral processing, mining studies, engineering, and mergers and acquisitions.
As a metallurgical engineer, Marcelo has worked in various operations, including base metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Sn, Ni), precious metal mines (Au), and smelting plants. His experience spans open-pit and underground mining, where he has led teams of over 50 people. He has been directly involved in all phases of mining projects, from conceptual engineering to construction and ramp-up. Marcelo has a strong background in evaluating the metallurgy of mining projects, including metallurgical test work, equipment sizing, design criteria, mass and metallurgical balance, plant layout, and cost estimation.
Before joining SLR, Marcelo was Head of M&A for NEXA Resources. Marcelo has played pivotal roles in deals totalling over 3.0 billion USD within the mining industry, including IPO, M&A transactions, and debt. Marcelo has led complex negotiations in the mining industry on both the sell-side and buy-side, with experience across the entire M&A cycle, including prospecting, valuation, negotiation, closure, and post-closure. He has a deep understanding of the key requirements for successful M&A and debt transactions in the mining industry, having advised buy-side and debt engagements in Brazil’s largest bauxite, copper, and REE transactions in recent years.
He has extensive experience in mining project valuation and key techniques, including DCF, multiples, and precedent transactions. In recent years, he has led multiple valuations across various commodities, countries, and project stages for equity and debt transactions, totalling over USD 20 billion in asset values.
Marcelo is a Competent Person (FAusIMM) for mineral processing and project valuation, with experience in Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve best practices. He has worked on various technical reports, including JORC, NI 43-101, and SK-1300, covering different commodities, project stages, and countries.
