Biography

Allan is the Technical Director responsible for geotechnical engineering within the SLR’s Stoke-on Trent office in the UK and has over 30 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering. He is responsible for the management of a team of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists and for co-ordinating multi-disciplinary projects.

He works on projects dealing with a range of geotechnical problems encountered in the infrastructure, energy, waste, maritime, mining, and construction industries as well as the reclamation of derelict land and earthworks. His technical capabilities include geotechnical feasibility and options studies before progressing to design work, stability assessments, and the provision of technical review and expert advice. His projects involve carrying out geotechnical assessments and ground investigations for the construction of various schemes and a particular expertise in the geotechnical design of wind turbine bases as well as crane platforms, access tracks, and river crossings to facilitate balance of plant design of onshore wind farm schemes. Allan also undertakes the design of earthworks and other elements such as surcharge and preloading schemes, sheet piles, shallow foundations, piles and supporting structures using a variety of construction systems including reinforced earth and MSE, modular walls, reinforced concrete and masonry walls. Allan has undertaken the assessment of existing flood defences, including review of existing river and canal breaches and remedial and improvement works to ensure safe operation.
