South Africa has a well-developed onshore wind energy sector, but a recent World Bank study shows that South Africa's offshore wind potential could be more than 900 GW, with modelled wind speeds of between 8.5 to 10.5 m/s.

Developing offshore wind projects will be challenging. However, strategic considerations such as the location of the facility, offshore marine conditions, routing marine transmission cables and connecting to on land transmission network are just some of the factors that need to be considered. Enabling regulations will have to be created in an environment of evolving technology, whilst developers will also need to meet international good practice standards to be able to unlock capital to develop and finance projects.
