Kuduskop Wind Farm - 400 kV Loop-In-Loop-Out Infrastructure at Komsberg Substation located within the Western and the Northern Cape South Africa
15 April 2026 | Client: Kuduskop Wind Farm (Pty) Ltd (SPV) and G7 Energies (Pty) Ltd
Kuduskop Wind Farm Pty Ltd (a special purpose entity of G7 Renewable Energies (G7)) propose to construct the 400kV Loop-In-Loop-Out (LILO) and substation upgrades at the existing Komsberg Substation located within the Witzenberg Local Municipality within the Cape Winelands District Municipality of the Western Cape, and within the Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality, within the Namakwa District Municipality of the Northern Cape, South Africa (hereafter referred to as the Project).
The proposed 400 kV LILO infrastructure and upgrades at the Komsberg MTS are required to enable grid connection for the authorised Kuduskop and Kuduskop North Wind Energy Facilities (WEFs). Power generated from these WEFs will be transmitted via the approved Over Head Powerline between Bon Espirange and Komsberg MTS, where it will enter the Eskom distribution network through the new 400 kV LILO.
As part of the grid connection scope, the LILO will be connected to the existing Droërivier–Kappa 400 kV transmission line and restrung from an existing pylon located outside the MTS boundary. The alignment follows the authorised Eskom servitude, thereby minimising the need for additional servitudes and reducing potential environmental disturbance. Additional towers will be constructed within the Komsberg MTS footprint to complete the LILO configuration.
All proposed upgrades at the Komsberg MTS will occur entirely within the existing substation footprint. These include extending the 400 kV busbar, constructing a 400/132 kV transformer bay with a 500 MVA transformer, and establishing two 400 kV feeder bays and two 132 kV feeder bays.
SLR Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SLR) has been appointed as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to undertake the BA process for the Project. This process aims to identify and assess the potential environmental and social impacts and define mitigation measures, where possible, to avoid and reduce significant negative environmental and social impacts and provide adequate information to the DFFE to make an informed decision.
