Client: AECOM SA for Stellenbosch Municipality
Proposed Rehabilitation of the Distillery Road Bridge, Stellenbosch
The Stellenbosch Municipality is proposing to rehabilitate the failing Distillery Road Bridge over the Plankenbrug River in the Bosman's Crossing area of Stellenbosch. The project would entail the reconstruction and widening of the bridge deck and substructure. The proposed project triggers Listed Activity 19 (Listing Notice 1) related to excavation within a watercourse. SLR has thus been appointed to complete the required Basic Assessment process in order to apply for Environmental Authorisation. Due to the heritage importance of the bridge crossing, Section 34 and 35 application processes in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act are also being undertaken.
The draft Basic Assessment Report and heritage permit applications have been updated to final versions after completion of the public and authority review and comment period. All documentation has been submitted to the competent authorities for decision-making. For information purposes, the final BAR is available for download below.
On 18 February 2021 Heritage Western Cape issued a Section 35 Permit for the proposed bridge rehabilitation project. The permit is issued in order to address the potential impact on archaeological resources that could be present in the proposed project footprint. The permit is available for download below. Any appeals against the decision must be submitted to Heritage Western Cape by 12 March 2021 (see further details in the permit).
