Methane guiding principles engaging global participation

On January 22, 2020, the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP) signatories announced a broad range of actions to mitigate methane emissions throughout the oil & gas industry. The press release can be found here. SLR supported this group by authoring eight Best Practice Guides and an interactive Cost Evaluation model. These eight documents and a unique interactive cost tool have been used as the basis for methane mitigation Master Classes being taught by the Sustainable Gas Institute of Imperial College London beginning in late October 2019 and continuing through 2020 at locations across the globe. The Guides are also now being translated into a number of languages.

There are now twenty-one MGP signatories that have committed to undertake a broad range of actions to strengthen the management of methane emissions throughout the oil and gas industry. The programme’s members can be found here. In addition, there are a coalition of international institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and academics that are endorsing and supporting organisations. A list of those groups can be found here.

The SLR team, led by Matt Harrison, with significant leadership roles by our partner contractor Dr. David Allen of The University of Texas, as well as SLR’s James Van Horne and Leslie Wong, developed many of the products that were presented on the MGP website, located here.
