Challenge

Codelco was seeking to approve an expansion project to extend its operations for an additional 30 years in the Ministro Hales Division, located in the Antofagasta Region, Chile. The objective was to increase the ore processing capacity from 500 ktpd to 550 ktpd, complying with the environmental and social requirements demanded by Chilean regulations.

Solution

SLR led the preparation of the Environmental Impact Study (EIA), comprehensively addressing the technical and social challenges of the project.

Activities included:

  • Air quality, noise and vibration studies.
  • Characterization of groundwater and surface water.
  • Research on soil, flora, vegetation and fauna.
  • Survey of life systems and customs of human groups, including protected population.
  • Evaluation of protected areas and priority sites.
  • Description of the archaeological and paleontological heritage.

Impact

SLR's work allowed Codelco to have a clear vision of environmental and social impacts, strengthening its sustainability strategy and ensuring the long-term viability of its operations.
