Conservation Management Plan for the Carmelite Monastery, Dalkeith

Challenge

The Carmelite Monastery in Dalkeith, built in 1935 and still occupied by the Carmelite community, required a clear, long‑term framework to guide its conservation and management. With over ninety years of continuous use, there was a need to ensure all future decisions recognised and respected the site’s cultural heritage significance on Noongar Country.

Solution

SLR worked closely with the Carmelite Sisters to develop a detailed understanding of the site’s cultural values, following the Burra Charter process to prepare a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CMP). The plan identifies and assesses heritage values, establishes strategic policies for conservation and adaptation, and provides practical recommendations for effective property management, maintenance, and long‑term care.

Impact

The CMP equips the Carmelite community with a robust, evidence‑based resource that supports informed decision‑making and protects the monastery’s heritage for future generations. The project demonstrates SLR’s commitment to thoughtful, culturally responsive heritage planning and our capability to support complex heritage projects across Australia and beyond.
