Impala Flash Dryer Project
Impala Platinum Limited (Impala), a member of the Implats group of companies, has a platinum group metals mining and processing operation located approximately 16 km north-north-west of the town Rustenburg in the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in the North West Province.
The mine operates with an approved consolidated Environmental Management Programme report (EMPr) (DMRE Reference number: NW30/5/1/2/3/2/1/130,131,132 and 133 EM) for the Smelter Complex and an Atmospheric Emissions Licence (AEL) (Reference Number: BPDM – RA2- March 2014 / Drying and Smelting) for drying and smelting.
Impala’s Smelter Complex has operational flash and spray dryers on Portion 2 of the farm Beerfontein 263 JQ. Impala is now proposing to amend its AEL to increase its flash drying capacity at its Smelter Complex, which entails:
- The installation of the second flash dryer (Phase 1); and
- The flash drying feed circuit upgrade (Phase 2).
As an interested and/or affected party (I&AP) registered on the project’s database you have been notified of the Basic Assessment Process for the proposed increase of the flash dryer capacity and associated feed circuit modifications at the Impala Rustenburg Smelter Complex. This serves to inform you that the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy – North West Region (DMRE) has granted an amended Environmental Authorisation (EA) to Impala Platinum Limited. The amended EA was granted on 11 January 2022 and was received by SLR on 04 February 2022.
This Environmental Authorisation (EA) is being circulated for a 20-days commenting period. Should you wish to appeal the DMRE decision, your appeal must be lodged in terms of Chapter 2 of the National Appeal Regulations, 2014 within 20 calendar days from the date of this notification (From 31 March to 21 April 2022). An appeal must be submitted to the Appeals Administrator in writing, by one of the methods outlined in the document, and on a form obtainable from the appeal authority. A prescribed appeal form, as well as assistance regarding the appeal process is obtainable from the office of the Appeal Authority.
