Feasibility Study for automated waste collection system

Feasibility Study for automated waste collection system

Location

Kingsford and Kensington, New South Wales

Randwick City Council was investigating the feasibility of an automated underground waste collection system (AWCS) in Kensington and Kingsford where a significant high-rise residential development is planned. This type of system is designed to reduce the number of garbage bins and the collection vehicles on the street. SLR’s joint APAC/UK team was appointed by Council to undertake a scoping and feasibility analysis for an underground AWCS.

The report provided Council with an overview of AWCS technology, potential suppliers, design, operation considerations and current use of AWCS in Australia.

SLR estimated future waste generation rates in the study area, developed an outline of designs, and a high-level financial assessment of capital and operational costs. Other considerations addressed by SLR included approvals and licencing considerations, amendment to existing council controls, pilot projects and potential funding sources.

SLR also reviewed alternative innovative methods of managing waste which may have addressed the key Council objectives.
