PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF A SOLAR PV FACILITY AND ASSOCIATED INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE SISHEN IRON ORE MINE

Sishen Iron Ore Company (SIOC), an Anglo American company, is proposing to apply for Environmental Authorisation for the development of a solar photovoltaic (PV) facility and associated infrastructure within the Mining Right area of the Sishen Iron Ore Mine (Sishen Mine) (the Project). The Sishen Mine is an opencast mine located close to the town of Kathu in the Northern Cape Province. The proposed Project will be located on an existing waste rock dump on portions 2 and the remaining extent of the Farm Sacha 468, and portion 1 of the Farm Sims 462.

SLR Consulting (Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SLR), an independent firm of Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs), has been appointed by Sishen Iron Ore Company to manage the Basic Assessment Process required in accordance with the National Environmental Management Act (No. 107 of 1998) Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (2014, as amended) for the Project.

A Background Information Document (BID) was compiled and is being made available for initial comment by Interested and Affected Parties (I&AP).

All comments and registrations must reach SLR by no later than 22 September 2022 for inclusion in the Basic Assessment Report. The BID is available for download below. An I&AP registration form is included with the BID.
