Shell Section 24G Application for the Rectification of Unlawful Construction of Churchill Service Station in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

Shell Downstream SA (Pty) Ltd own and operate the Churchill Service Station in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. The service station stores and retails hydrocarbon products (Petroleum and Diesel) which are classified as ‘dangerous goods’. These hydrocarbon products are stored in USTs at the site and retailed to the public. The initial site operations commenced in 2001 and as such required an environmental authorisation in terms of Activity 1c of Schedule 1 of GNR1182 of 5 September 1997, as amended, in terms of Section 21 of the Environment Conservation Act 73 of 1989.

Status

The draft report for the site was previously released for public review in November 2021, however, a geohydrological assessment and a heritage screening assessment of the site have been subsequently undertaken. The draft Section 24G report has been updated to include the findings of the studies and is available for a 30-day public review period. 

Should you and/or your organisation wish to comment on any aspect of the Report comments should be forwarded to SLR at the email address and telephone number shown above. For comments to be included in the Report prepared for the decision-making purposes, they should reach SLR by no later than 14 December 2022.
