Following our win of the ‘RoSPA Health at Work Award’ earlier in the year - for demonstrating the best management of health at work during 2020 - we were delighted to attend the RoSPA Awards Ceremony to celebrate.

The ceremony was held in the grounds of the RoSPA Head Office in Birmingham, scaled down and outside due to Covid restrictions, but nevertheless was attended by all award winners and was an important occasion. The awards were presented by Baroness Jolly, the President of RoSPA.

To be awarded the sole winners of the ‘RoSPA Health at Work Award’ we were required to demonstrate how everyone within SLR supports our strategic health and safety goals, covering our Mental Health First Aid Champions, to private health care access, our mental health and wellbeing hub, and our virtual networking, amongst many more.

Health and safety is always a key focus for SLR, but 2020 saw us encourage wellbeing aspects at such a crucial time. With our people working from home, we recognised a loss of day-to-day connections, which led to a host of both team-level and region-wide initiatives to keep us talking and checking in with each other.

With this experience and our award win in hand, RoSPA invited us to run a member’s webinar, focussing on everything we’re doing around Occupational Health Risk Management, with a particular focus on the area of mental health.

Hoping to inspire other companies, SLR’s Emily Fleming (European HSEQ Manager) and Fiona Chambers (HSEQ Advisor) led the webinar last week. We were delighted to receive a stellar introduction from Matt Cryer (Awards Standards Manager, RoSPA), stating, “SLR put in a really strong submission. The judges were really impressed and considered the benchmark for what that award stands for.”

Fiona and Emily went on to discuss how our practices have changed since Covid-19 hit. They outlined SLR’s mental health & wellbeing hub, our mental health first aid champions, and our various virtual networking activities, to name a few. It also gave us an opportunity to share our recent video for World Mental Health Day, and there was space for an engaging Q&A session at the end.

We’re very pleased to have been recognised in this way for our focus on positive mental health at SLR, and to have been given the platform by RoSPA to share our personal insight. You can learn more about SLR’s ‘One Team Culture’ here.
