Power Engineering
The energy industry is undergoing rapid transformation as electrification, large-scale renewables, energy storage, hydrogen, and new strategic loads such as data centres reshape power networks. Utilities and system operators across the globe, are adapting to new system behaviours, hybrid generation portfolios, and advanced stability and compliance requirements.
SLR’s Power Engineering team works internationally across transmission, distribution, private networks, microgrids, and offshore systems. With decades of experience, we help clients navigate grid connection challenges, system performance, grid code compliance, and delivery risks, in an environment where grid access is becoming a critical factor in project success.
Overview
SLR’s electrical engineering and grid experts support renewable and low-carbon projects through technical due diligence, owner’s engineer services, power system studies, and cable design. Our capabilities cover project feasibility, preliminary design and interconnection support, detailed design (EOR), owner's engineering, and power system studies. We work across solar, wind, battery energy storage system (BESS), data centres, industrial demand, and resilience‑critical facilities, helping clients secure viable grid solutions and deliver projects efficiently and globally, in line with system operator requirements.

-
Engineer-of-Record services
- Detailed electrical and civil engineering design services through to construction documentation, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, utility and client technical requirements, and project performance objectives. This includes medium- and high-voltage collection systems, grading, stormwater, site access, substations and switchyards, protection and control systems, grounding, lightning protection, and power quality analysis.
-
Onshore and offshore cable system engineering
- Spanning electrical cable system design for offshore renewable projects, including concept to FEED level for export and array cable systems, thermal rating studies, test plans, and cost models. We also support onshore developers with challenging connections in complex environments with existing infrastructure.
-
Dynamic cable rating studies
- Using dynamic rating tools to more accurately model the thermal performance of subsea cables, reducing costs and improving power transmission, leading to significant capex savings.
-
Grid connection feasibility
- Early-stage assessment of viable grid connection pathways through wide-area transmission and distribution network analysis. We evaluate substation capacity, constraints, and practical deliverability, providing strategic heat maps, GIS‑based connection options, high-level single-line diagrams, and indicative cost ranges. Our team supports engagement with network and system operators during pre‑application discussions, prepares accurate connection applications, and advises on readiness and documentation requirements under evolving global connection reform frameworks to help projects progress towards a credible, buildable connection strategy.
-
Technical due diligence
- Independent technical and commercial assessment of grid connection agreements, power system studies, design documentation, liabilities, and operational risks. We support investors, lenders, developers, and owners across global markets, providing RAG‑rated insights and mitigation strategies to accelerate transactions and protect long-term asset value.
-
Power system studies
- Advanced modelling across steady-state, dynamic, and electromagnetic transient domains using industry‑leading tools (e.g., ETAP, CDEGS, PowerFactory, PSCAD). We assess voltage, fault levels, stability, harmonics, protection coordination, and grid code compliance to support applications, FEED, detailed design, and operational integration worldwide. Our work also covers complex industrial offtakers and resilience‑critical loads, including studies that integrate with digital twin environments to enhance operational planning.
-
Owner’s engineer
- Independent engineering oversight across development, procurement, construction, and commissioning. We review electrical designs, interface points, layouts, cabling, and constructability; coordinate with utilities and independent connection providers; and oversee energisation and compliance activities. Our global owner’s engineer role ensures projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with system operator requirements.
