Challenge

Croft Poles and Timber (Croft) operate a timber processing and treatment site in Kauri, Northland supplying the construction industry with various grades of treatment timber and complete timber poles to local and export markets. The site has a suite of resources consents from the Northland Regional Council which are due to be renewed. Croft required a range of specialists to advise on how best to approach the resource consent process and to provide the expert reports to support their resource consent applications.

Solution

SLR is a trusted advisor to Croft and through our experienced technical experts across multidisciplinary services we were able to provide advice to develop a resource consent application and provide technical assistance. Our Planning, Ecology, Air Quality, and Contaminated Land teams provided the following technical inputs:

  • Development of a fit for purpose assessment of environmental effects document, draft conditions and policy assessment utilising our specialist natural resources planners.
  • Ecological environment assessment of the stream onsite, using water quality, stream sediment and macroinvertebrate data collected by SLR.
  • Site effects assessment using an atmospheric dispersion model.
  • Contaminated land interpolation, assessment and reporting.

SLR advised Croft on the consenting strategy, worked with a range of specialists, and led the preparation of the consent applications and lodgement with the Northland Regional Council.

Impact

The renewed resource consents will enable Croft to continue their operations and to plan for future improvements and expansion of the site operations as well as continuous environmental improvements.

Croft are a family owned and operated business and play an important role in the community as an employer and supporter of several local organisations and sporting charities. The continued operations and expansion of the site will provide economic and social benefits for the local community.
