Challenge

At a critical stage of the global energy transition, enhancing sustainability and transparency across critical mineral supply chains has become a core industry priority. Chengxin Lithium Group, a leading Chinese lithium battery materials company with significant refining operations in the Indonesian Tsingshan Industrial Parks, proactively partnered with SLR to develop a responsible minerals supply chain management system aligned with international best practices for its Indonesian operations.

SLR is a globally recognised provider of integrated sustainability solutions. Drawing on its global expertise and local technical support, the SLR team worked closely with Chengxin Lithium to align its systems with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas and the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP). Together, the teams implemented a structured, group-wide capacity-building programme for responsible minerals due diligence.

Solutions

Gap analysis

SLR conducted a comprehensive assessment including document reviews, management interviews, and on-site evaluations to identify gaps between existing practices, RMAP requirements, and international best practices.

System development

Starting from the ground up, SLR supported the establishment and enhancement of a group-wide supply chain due diligence management system. This included the development of management manuals, supplier assessment and onboarding procedures, grievance mechanisms, and internal audit processes, enabling a transition from reactive compliance to a formalised, auditable management framework.

Capacity building

Tailored training sessions were delivered to headquarters staff and key business units to ensure project teams fully understood due diligence requirements and could support the effective long-term operation of the system.

Impact

Through close collaboration, Chengxin Lithium’s Indonesian subsidiary successfully passed an independent third-party audit conducted by RMI and was formally awarded RMAP certification. This achievement makes Chengxin Lithium the first lithium salt refining company in the Indonesian Tsingshan Industrial Parks to obtain RMAP certification.

The certification demonstrates that Chengxin Lithium’s supply chain ESG management capabilities meet internationally recognised standards and strengthens trust with global customers and investors, particularly in meeting regulatory and compliance expectations in international markets.
