Engineering Design (EOD) for Scotford Solar
- Client Name
- Scotford Solar
- Location
- Alberta, Canada
Challenge
The Scotford Solar Project, located at the Shell Scotford Refinery, is a 58 MW (AC) / 81 MW (DC) fixed, ground-mounted solar facility interconnected at 25 kV. As one of Canada’s largest behind-the-meter solar installations, the project required careful integration within an active industrial refinery environment.
The client required a design that would optimize long-term energy production while minimizing disruption to existing refinery operations.
Solution
Powerhaus (now part of SLR) served as the electrical Engineer of Record (EOR), delivering full engineering design services in collaboration with Alltrade Industrial as the prime EPC contractor.
The team developed electrical solutions to maximize production yield while maintaining operational continuity within the refinery. In addition to leading electrical design, Powerhaus directed the civil and stormwater management design, optimizing road grading and reducing civil works by strategically leveraging the site’s natural topography.
Close coordination across engineering disciplines ensured the facility was efficiently integrated into the existing industrial infrastructure.
Impact
The completed project represents one of Canada’s largest behind-the-meter solar installations and supports Shell’s long-term energy transition strategy.
By delivering an optimized, constructible design within a complex operating environment, Powerhaus enabled the refinery to offset approximately 20% of its energy demand with renewable power, advancing emissions reduction goals while maintaining operational performance.
