Landfill Monitoring Program for Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services

Country: USA
Location: Anchorage, Alaska
Sector: Waste Management
Services: Landfill Design, Engineering & CQA
Hydrogeology
Geological Services
Environmental Regulation & Permitting

Project Objectives:

Long-term groundwater monitoring, hydrogeological assessment and dewatering, landfill gas monitoring, laboratory coordination, database management and development, regulatory agency negotiation, SWPP compliance review.

Our Role:

SLR was awarded a competitive contract for landfill monitoring and reporting for SWS in 2005. Since that time, SLR's staff has provided leachate sampling and reporting for the ARL on a monthly basis. SLR has also performed semi-annual and annual water sampling and reporting for the International Airport Landfill (IAL), Merrill Field Landfill (MFL), and Peter's Creek Landfill (PCL).   In addition to landfill monitoring and reporting, SLR has conducted hydrogeological assessments, updated the SWS program manual, and conducted trend analysis and supplemental reporting for negotiations with ADEC.
SLR also designed an implemented a hydrogeologic study to investigate the cause of leachate seepage at MFL in Anchorage. The investigation consisted of compilation of existing hydrologic and geological studies in the area, followed by the installation and monitoring of several piezometers to determine the groundwater flow regime in the area of the seep. This information was used to identify the probable source of the groundwater mounding causing the seep, and to design and implement mitigation measures.
