Environmental Baseline Data Collection - Pebble Project

Country: USA
Location: Iliamna, Alaska
Sector: Mining and Minerals
Services: Toxicology, Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment
Environmental Impact & Strategic Environmental Assessments

Project Objectives:

The goals of the data collection were to define baseline conditions prior to permit application, and to meet data quality objectives for risk assessment.

Our Role:

SLR was retained to plan and implement a sampling program for soil, vegetation, and sediment in three different watersheds that could be impacted through mining development.
Our role expanded to include data evaluation and interpretation of surface water and fish data collected as part of the Environmental Baseline determination.
The technical portion of the project involved statistical manipulation of an extensive chemical database on surface water, sediment, plants, fish, and soil.  Statistical distributions were identified for each analyte in each medium, and appropriate statistical analyses were conducted based on these results.  Different baseline conditions were identified in each watershed, and differential uptake of chemicals across plant species were also identified.
Our work also included technical presentations to Trustees and regulatory Agencies, technical writing, and senior review of groundwater and small pools studies conducted by others.
