Project Objectives:
To characterize the physical and chemical sediments in which organic remains are preserved, to map their extent, and to design a management strategy and design a GIS analytical tool for modelling below-ground conditions for their continued preservation.
The GIS team analysed many below ground datasets to assess the typography of the ground and deposits to aid in the formulation of the management strategy. The full GIS data model was passed to the council for future use in managing the deposits.
Our Role:
SLR undertook this pioneering research into the nature of in situ preservation of deep archaeological deposits within an historic urban centre. It has characterized the factors that led to the formation and preservation of waterlogged deposits, and has identified threats from lack of natural recharge. SLR has produced a management strategy which has been adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document.
