Project Objectives:
To develop sustainable, community-based low impact tourism products, based on natural heritage.
Our Role:
Working with the WDTP, SLR developed the strategic Walking Through Time programme, focused on developing community-based guided walks on aspects of natural and built heritage, landscape, archaeology, botany, soils, farming / fishing practices, vernacular architecture and building stones - linking the natural and cultural landscapes.
Feasibility studies for walking/ cycling routes were carried out in Mayo, Donegal, Leitrim, Fermanagh, Galway and Carlow. SLR worked with Kildare County Council and the Heritage Council to identify heritage aspects of the Grand Canal, land use and habitats, town walks and hill walks. A Walking Strategy for the Cooley Mountains was completed in 2008 for Louth County Council.
