SLR acquires further African consultancy

Release date: 6th February 2012

Leading international environmental firm, SLR Consulting, has further expanded its capabilities in Southern African with the acquisition of Namibian Environmental Impact Assessment specialists, A Speiser Environmental Consultants (ASEC).

The deal is SLR's sixth acquisition in less than two years and represents the company's fourth in Southern Africa following the purchase of BIWAC, Metago and GreenEng, last year.

ASEC, which is based in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, has established a strong reputation for its holistic approach to EIAs which includes consideration of social, institutional and economic factors as well as ecological issues.

This approach is valued by its clients who include mining companies Cheetah Minerals Exploration and Aurecon Namibia; diamond companies, Bonaparte Diamond Mines NL and Tidal Diamonds as well as energy companies, Nova Energy and Solida Renewable Energy, among others.

Alexandra Speiser, who established the firm in 2003, said: "We believe that jointly evaluating the environmental and social aspects of proposed projects is crucial to ensuring sustainable development that benefits all stakeholders. SLR represents a great fit for us and we are very excited about ASEC becoming part of the group."

SLR International Operations Director Neil Penhall, said: "This is the latest step we have taken to benefit from the opportunity for growth that exists in supplying the African mining and resources sectors with environmental services.

"We are looking forward to working with ASEC's clients, many of whom are new to us."
